  38. This disk contains HP4.PRD, the driver that provides support for the
  39. Hewlett-Packard(R) (HP) LaserJet 4 printer. This printer driver is intended
  40. for use with Microsoft Word version 5.5 for MS-DOS only. Any use of the
  41. included file with any version of Microsoft Word earlier than 5.5 is
  42. untested, and Microsoft does not guarantee the results.

  44. TO INSTALL SUPPORT FOR THE HP LASERJET 4
  45. ========================================

  47. 1. Insert the enclosed disk in your floppy disk drive.
  48.  
  49. 2. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following and press ENTER
  50.  
  51.       copy <drive>:\hp4.prd <path>
  52.  
  53.    where <drive> is your floppy disk drive and <path> is the location
  54.    of your Word program directory. For example, if the disk is in
  55.    drive A and your Word program directory is on drive C and is called
  56.    WORD5, type the following and press ENTER:
  57.  
  58.       copy a:\hp4.prd c:\word5
  59.  
  60. 3. Start Word 5.5. From the File menu, choose Printer Setup. From the
  61.    Files list, select HP4.PRD. Choose the OK button.
  62.  
  63. Word uses POSTSCRP.PRD to support PostScript(R) printing on LaserJet
  64. printers. For more information, see the "PostScript Printers" section in
  65. Chapter 2 of the "Printer Information for Microsoft Word" manual.

  91. Word and LaserJet Symbol Sets
  92. -----------------------------

  94. Word creates some special fonts to access additional symbol sets. For
  95. example, the CourierPC font is identical to regular Courier but uses the
  96. PC-8 symbol set to support the line draw feature of Word. Fonts ending in
  97. "Legal," such as PrestigeLegal, are identical to fonts without the suffix,
  98. but use the Legal character set, which includes the copyright symbol,
  99. registered trademark symbol, and others. Fonts ending in "850" use the
  100. IBM(R) PC-850 character set, which includes an expanded set of
  101. international characters.

  103. Word does not always support every symbol set available. You can access
  104. unsupported symbol sets by using the MergePRD program to modify your .PRD
  105. file. For more information, see Chapter 5, "Using the MergePRD Program," of
  106. the "Printer Information for Microsoft Word" manual.

  108. Adding Support for Fonts
  109. ------------------------
  110.  
  111. Word supports most of the LaserJet fonts currently available, but new fonts
  112. frequently appear on the market. You can add support for any new LaserJet
  113. font using the MergePRD program and the Tagged Font Matrix (TFM) files
  114. supplied by the printer manufacturer. The .TFM files for new HP fonts are
  115. stored on the AutoFont Support disk that comes with the fonts. For more
  116. information, see Chapter 5, "Using the MergePRD Program," of the "Printer
  117. Information for Microsoft Word" manual.

  119. Downloading Fonts
  120. -----------------

  122. To use downloadable fonts with the downloading program in Word, you should
  123. place the appropriate .PRD file, a .DAT file with the same filename as the
  124. .PRD file, and the font set files in the same directory (or on the same
  125. floppy disk). The .PRD and .DAT files must be in the same directory. The
  126. .DAT file is automatically copied with the .PRD file when you use Setup to
  127. install your printer driver. For more information on downloading LaserJet
  128. fonts, see Chapter 4, "Downloading Fonts," of the "Printer Information for
  129. Microsoft Word" manual.
  130.  
  131. Landscape Printing
  132. ------------------
  133.  
  134. The LaserJet 4 can rotate internal fonts to print portrait fonts in
  135. landscape orientation; you do not need a landscape .PRD file to print in
  136. landscape orientation. However, you cannot combine portrait and landscape
  137. formats on the same page.
  138.  
  139. Autorotation
  140. ------------
  141.  
  142. Font autorotation printing is available on the HP LaserJet 4. The HPGL2
  143. graphics resolution uses the Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language to draw
  144. vector graphics rather than bitmapped images. The HPGL2 resolution can
  145. print most graphics more quickly than the standard bitmapped resolutions,
  146. although it requires more memory. HPGL2 graphics print at 300 dots per inch
  147. (dpi).
  148.  
  149. Pattern and Shading
  150. -------------------

  152. You can access the font pattern and font shading capability of the HP
  153. LaserJet 4 using the Colors box in the Format Character dialog box. Three
  154. font patterns and Dark, Medium, Light, and White font shading are
  155. available.
  156.  
  157. Line Drawing
  158. ------------
  159.  
  160. Lines drawn with the line draw feature of Word should be formatted with the
  161. CourierPC or Linedraw fonts to take full advantage of the line draw or
  162. Format Borders features.
  163.  
  164. Unprintable Regions
  165. -------------------
  166.  
  167. Like other laser printers, LaserJet printers do not print all the way to
  168. the edge of a page. The area around the edge of a page where the printer
  169. cannot print is called an unprintable region. The sizes of the unprintable
  170. region for the HP LaserJet 4 are included in the "Printer Specifications"
  171. section below.
  172.  
  173. In Word versions 4.0 and earlier, you have to adjust the margins and page
  174. length settings in the Format Margins command to accommodate unprintable
  175. regions. You do not have to do so in Word version 5.5. You should select
  176. the exact margins and page dimensions you want.
  177.  
  178. Paper Feed
  179. ----------
  180.  
  181. The Paper Feed box in the File Printer Setup dialog box should normally be
  182. set to Continuous. However, on the LaserJet 4 you can select different
  183. paper trays or an envelope feeder. If you select Mixed, the first page will
  184. feed from bin 1, and succeeding pages will feed from bin 2.
  185.  
  186. LaserJet Memory
  187. ---------------
  188.  
  189. Printing downloadable fonts and graphics can fill up your printer's memory.
  190. If that happens, the printer will present an error message, and your
  191. document will lose text or print incorrectly. If you're using downloadable
  192. fonts, you can use fewer fonts or smaller font sizes, or you can substitute
  193. cartridge fonts instead. To reduce the amount of memory a graphic requires,
  194. you can print the graphic at a lower resolution or make it smaller. You can
  195. also purchase additional memory for most LaserJet models.
  196.
